How To Use WhatsApp Abroad

Use WhatsApp anywhere, anytime – for free through a Wi-Fi connection.

WhatsApp is a simple, quick and easy way to stay connected to people all over the world. It is especially popular when users are traveling abroad as it is completely free through a Wi-Fi connection.

1.)    Disable Data Roaming

WhatsApp is Wi-Fi reliant, meaning that it is ineffective if you’re not connected to the internet. If you plan to just use a Wi-Fi dependant app to communicate, then you should disable your data roaming. This is to guarantee that you don’t get charged should your phone start using cellular data once you’re out of a Wi-Fi zone. You can turn your cellular data off in Settings > Cellular.

2.)    Connect to a Wi-Fi Source

Connect to Wi-Fi through the Settings menu when you are in a hotspot. Whilst abroad, there are usually free hotspots in restaurants and bars or, accommodations usually charge Wi-Fi for a small fee. However, free hotspots and hotspots with a lot of users can often be unreliable due to fluctuating signals. This results in minimal access to the internet.

3.)    Alternatively, Use a SIM & MiFi Device

A MiFi device is a mobile hotspot that provides superfast 4G LTE access for up to 10 Wi-Fi enabled devices, smartphones and tablets on Europe’s most trusted networks. Use data abroad for WhatsApp just like you would at home; send images, videos and messages without a fluctuating Wi-Fi signal. Coupled with a European Data SIM, MiFi devices eliminate the risk of getting caught out by unwanted roaming charges.
